EMC is the interaction of electrical and electronic equipment with its electromagnetic environment, and with other equipment. All electronic devices have the potential to emit electromagnetic fields and with the growth in our use of everyday electronic devices there is a growing potential for devices to cause interference in operation and lead to possible malfunction.
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) – Guidance can be found on the European Commission website at http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/sectors/electrical/documents/emc/guidance/index_en.htm
Before sending an electronic product to a lab for compliance testing for EMI emissions, you can perform a pre-compliance (far-field) EMI scan on the product with a spectrum analyser and an antenna. If the product's emissions occur at amplitude levels that exceed limits set by national and international standards, you'll need to hunt down emissions sources and mitigate the problem.
To do that a comprehensive suite of basic building blocks are required to be put in place to do testing and these can be reconfigured as test requirements change.
These include RF shielding and a variety of Absorbing Clamps; Amplifiers; Analysers/Receivers; Antenna couplers; Antennas / Masts / Tripods; Comb Generators; Coupling Decoupling Networks; LISNs; Manual Shielded Boxes; Near Field Probes; Pneumatic Shielded Boxes; TEM Cells; Transient Limiters; Turntables
Each building block serves a purpose to ensure your overall measurement integrity. For example, RF shielding reduces the electromagnetic field in a space by blocking the field with barriers made of conductive or magnetic materials. Shielding is typically applied to enclosures to isolate electrical devices from the 'outside world', and to cables to isolate wires from the environment through which the cable runs.
You can often uncover the source of EMI emissions with near-field probes which let you "sniff" where EMI lurks—around circuits, cables, and enclosures.
