About Oscilloscopes

Oscilloscopes are easily the most useful instrument for testing because it graphically allows you to see signals at different points in the circuit. The best way of investigating an electronic system is to monitor signals at the input and output of each system block, checking that each block is operating as expected and is correctly linked to the next. That is an oscilloscope's primary function is to provide a graph of a signal's voltage over time.

Oscilloscopes let you “see” electrical signals.

Energy, vibrating particles, and other invisible forces are everywhere in our circuitry. The oscilloscope converts these into electrical signals that you can observe, study and rectify.

In its basic form an oscilloscope is a laboratory instrument commonly used to display and analyse the waveform of electronic signals. In effect, the device draws a graph of the instantaneous signal voltage as a function of time. The display is broken up into horizontal divisions and vertical divisions. Time is displayed from left to right on the horizontal scale. Instantaneous voltage appears on the vertical scale, with positive values going upward and negative values going downward.

Frequencies covered include, 50Mhz - 350Mhz; 400Mhz - 3.5Ghz; 4Ghz - 40Ghz as laboratory instrumentation.

Mixed Signal Oscilloscopes are also available which offer additional digital inputs so combining the functionality of a logic analyser
