Demystifying EMC 2016

Demystifying EMC 2016

Published: 3rd December 2015

Following on from the successful event in 2015, Rohde & Schwarz is hosting Demystifying EMC 2016 on Monday January 18th 2016 at the Royal Berkshire Conference Centre, at Reading’s Madjeski Stadium.

Themes such as EMC fundamentals, updates on regulations and standards, basics of circuit design and component selection through to more specific MIL and Transportation topics will be covered. You can pick the sessions that you want to attend.

As with the previous event there will be room in the day to network with peers and speak with industry experts. MCS Test Equipment will be attending, as official Rohde & Schwarz Rental Partner and our EMC experts will be on hand to answer your questions. If you have an EMC challenge, want to brush up on your knowledge or are venturing into the topic for the first time this event will cater for you.

Demystifying EMC (part1 & 2) - Andy Coombes, Rohde & Schwarz

What is EMC? Why do I need it? How does it apply to my field of work? What do I have to do? How good is good enough? Find out all this and more in our comprehensive overview for anyone new to EMC

EMC design for non-phD folks - Alistair Duffy, DeMontfort University

EMC design topics are frequently accompanied with some general design rules. However, what is the origin of those design rules. This talk will explore the technical basis of some of these using straightforward engineering principles.

Demystifying the selection and use of cable ferrites - Glen Wallis, Wurth Electronics

How often are you in an EMC lab, and need to find a ferrite on a cable to pass an EMI test? Here we explain the basics on magnetic theory and the different ferrite materials used, which leads into how to calculate the required impedance and select the correct cable ferrites, to enable you to find EMI solutions quicker.

Understanding the Railway EMC Environment- Nick Wainwright, York EMC

The railway is a complex electromagnetic environment and understanding the importance of EMC from project concept to completion is key to ensuring a safe and reliable Railway

EMC Implications of Vehicle Electrification, Mark Emery & Alastair Ruddle, Horiba MIRA

Vehicle electrification is resulting in new EMC challenges for the automotive industry. This session will outline recent changes and outstanding gaps in automotive EMC standards in relation to electrical powertrain technologies. The related issue of human exposure to the low-frequency magnetic fields that are associated with high-voltage vehicle power networks and wireless power transfer will also be discussed.

EMC for Military Environments - Steve Hayes, Element Materials Technology

This presentation will review the EMC requirements for a range of military environments and discuss the applicable tests and purpose. It will also highlight the connection between testing against military standards and CE Marking against the EMC Directive and highlight how manufacturers can reduce their EMC test cost burden by considering these items together.

Where MIL meets COTS - Julian Jones, Hursley EMC

A look into the challenges, considerations and implications surrounding the use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) equipment in Military (MOTS) environments and importantly, vice versa

Demystifying Inductance - Alistair Duffy, DeMontfort University

Understanding inductance is vital for EMC engineering. This talk investigates inductance starting from its origins in current flow.

Understanding EMC issues with EM Simulation - Marcel Plonka, CST

Simulation can be helpful during the design process as well as product troubleshooting. Performing EM simulations at the earliest possible stage will allow for EMC awareness throughout the complete design process. In this talk, we will focus on system level simulation of PCBs and housings and demonstrate the workflow for radiated and conducted emissions.

Wireless Device & Regulation - Michael Derby, ACB Europe

Regulatory compliance routes for electronic and radio equipment in the USA, Canada and Europe. An explanation of the processes with regard to the FCC, Industry Canada, and CE Marking to the EMC, R&TTE and RE Directives.

Module Approval & Intergration - Michael Derby, ACB Europe

Radio modules and their installation into other products. An explanation of the regulatory authorisation routes for radio modules for use in the USA, Canada, Europe and Japan. An explanation of how to incorporate pre-approved modules into hosts products; including details of what testing or regulatory compliance steps, if any, are needed when integrating a radio module into a host device.

The event has the backing of the IET so why not count this event towards your continuing professional development (CPD)? The day will start at 9am and will finish at 5pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

How to Measure a MOSFET I-V Curve

One of the best ways to ensure a MOSFET is functioning properly and meets specifications is to determine its characteristics by tracing I-V curves. There are a number of output characteristics requiring I-V tests; you can derive gate leakage, breakdown voltage, threshold voltage, transfer characteristics, and drain current all by simply tracing I-V characteristics and verifying the device is working as it should.
