Improving and saving lives with wireless technologies

The Internet of Things is set to have a significant impact in the medical sector. Wireless technology in medicine will enable remote patient monitoring, with dosages being monitored and administered in real-time based on up-to-the minute needs. The risk of infection in sterile operating environments will also be reduced by getting rid of cables and wires.

Such developments will have a huge impact on quality of life for patients. Take, for example, the case of patients with diabetes. Currently they may need to travel to clinic to have their blood sugar monitored to make sure that their insulin dosage is correct. With developments in wireless technology, these patients will be able to have their levels monitored remotely, with the diabetic pump connecting via Bluetooth to a smartphone which would then transmit the results to the patient’s doctor. Insulin levels could then be adjusted remotely, without the need to travel to see a doctor.
